Dear Friends,
Fifteen years ago, Collage Dance was born from a belief that ballet should reflect the full breadth of our humanity.
We knew that transforming ballet would take more than talent. It would require tenacity, vision, and a community willing to believe that the stage should reflect our city. This season, we celebrated a milestone not just in years, but in impact – 15 years of reframing the narrative.
And what a season it was.
Our professional company toured to a dozen cities, performing for more than 25,000 people – bringing powerful, relevant works to new audiences across the country. We toured Their Eyes Were Watching God for the first time this season, bringing to stages across the country a ballet inspired by Zora Neale Hurston’s seminal novel – one of the most important works of 20th-century American literature. By translating this richly layered, deeply human story to the stage, we offered audiences a rare and necessary experience: a ballet that not only features a Black protagonist, but honors a Black literary masterpiece. In doing so, we continued our work to ensure that ballet reflects the full breadth of our humanity, expanding the canon to include voices, histories, and narratives that have too often been excluded.
Today, Collage Dance is one of the largest ballet companies in the nation. Our state-of-the-art facility hums with the energy of hundreds of students each week. Our community programs continue to expand access and relevance. And the legacy we’re building is felt not just in Memphis, but in communities nationwide.
None of this would be possible without you.
As you read through this report, we hope you see more than numbers and milestones. We hope you see the impact of your own generosity. Your support has helped young dancers discover their power. It has allowed new voices to take the stage. And it has affirmed that excellence and equity are not opposing forces, rather they are inseparable when we dare to dream differently.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we are not only building a lasting institution, we are reframing the narrative.
With gratitude,
“‘The present was an egg laid by the past that had the future inside its shell.’ (Zora Neale Hurston) Collage Dance exists at all three levels and I appreciate that.”
As Chair of the Board of Directors, it is my privilege to reflect on a year that not only marks a major milestone for Collage Dance Collective, but also signals what’s possible when vision is matched with commitment. I hope you will enjoy, as I have, seeing the work and joy of Season 15 laid out in these pages.
Fifteen years ago, Collage began as a bold response to a lack of representation in ballet. Today, it stands as a national leader—artistically, educationally, and institutionally. This transformation has not happened by accident. It’s the result of careful stewardship, tireless advocacy, and a shared belief that equity and excellence are not only compatible, but essential. Thank you for being with us on that journey.
This season, the Board remained steadfast in its commitment to supporting artistic excellence at every level. Whether by securing resources to expand national touring, investing in the creation of original works, or backing initiatives that bring underrepresented stories to the stage, our goal has been clear: to ensure that the artistry at Collage is not only sustained, but elevated. We believe that groundbreaking work requires bold support—and we’ve worked diligently to provide the structure, strategy, and funding needed to make that possible.
What inspires me most is that Collage doesn’t just present great art—it redefines what the arts can do in a community. It nurtures talent. It creates access. It cultivates pride. It bridges generational and cultural divides. And it offers a vision of what our city, and our country, can be when all are invited to the stage.
Thank you for believing in this vision. Your continued support empowers this work to grow—artistically, operationally, and impactfully.

Collage Dance Collective, one of the 50 largest ballet companies in the U.S., is the professional company of Collage Dance, founded in 2006 and rooted in Memphis since 2007. Renowned for its exceptional talent and virtuosic dancers, the Collective has become a national leader in reimagining ballet and expanding its reach. With artists hailing from 7 countries, across the United States, and even from Memphis itself, Collage Dance Collective embodies the greatness of American dance on the world stage.
The 2024–2025 season, entitled Reframing the Narrative, celebrated Collage Dance Collective’s 15th anniversary and showcased some of the most powerful and universal stories ever told. The anniversary season held special significance as Collage continued to push boundaries and expand the classical canon to include stories that had historically been marginalized or erased. Through bold performances, new commissions, and a commitment to showcasing diverse voices, Collage Dance Collective reclaimed its space in classical narratives, resonating with both ballet lovers and newcomers alike.

“Since joining the Conservatory, Amarion has gained confidence, built up his social skills, and learned the discipline to collaborate effectively. He dances with emotion and communicates with his movements, and his determination to master each technique and skill has taught him to turn any weakness into a strength. As his parents, we truly appreciate the love and support from Collage Dance!”
Founded in September 2009, the Conservatory is Collage Dance’s flagship youth training program, dedicated to nurturing the next generation of dancers and creative leaders. Rooted in excellence, the Conservatory provides intensive, year‑round classical and contemporary training under the guidance of expert faculty, as well as a 4-week Summer Intensive program for dancers five years of age through college. Our curriculum emphasizes artistry, technique, and discipline, preparing students for dance careers or for professional opportunities outside the arts.
In the 2024-2025 school year, years of dedication and training paid off for our senior students. The six graduating seniors enrolled in the Conservatory were awarded a total of $4 million in merit scholarships between them. Over the summer, Collage students were found in the top summer dance programs in the country, including American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, School of American Ballet (New York City Ballet), Houston Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, and Dance Theatre of Harlem, building on their technique and experience and carrying “Collage excellence” out into the dance world.
Turning Pointe is Collage Dance’s in-school education program providing high-quality training in ballet and other dance disciplines to under-resourced schools. The program lays a foundation for lifetime success by nurturing a love for the arts, building confidence, and preparing those with talent and interest for advanced study at the Collage Dance Conservatory.
With added support through wellness workshops and family resources, Turning Pointe offers a holistic approach to dance education while expanding access, cultivating discipline, and opening doors to future opportunities.
In the 2024-2025 school year, Turning Pointe was present in 19 schools in the greater Memphis area. Supported by donor-funded scholarships, 29 children from the Turning Pointe program enrolled in the Conservatory for continued training, and 52% of boys in our Conservatory started in the Turning Pointe program.
Saviana began studying ballet at age 7 when Turning Pointe came to KIPP Memphis Elementary School where she was in 2nd grade. From that starting point, she spent 10 years training in the Conservatory on scholarship, even participating in the elite Collage Youth Ensemble, an invitation-only, tuition-free group of the most dedicated young dancers. This fall, Saviana is taking the lessons learned in the dance studio – dedication, excellence, commitment, poise, and more – and matriculating at American University in Washington, DC on a full-ride scholarship, moving into her bright future with confidence and grace.

“I am so grateful for the adult beginner ballet classes I was able to take here. After not dancing since I was a kid, I was so nervous to step back into it, not knowing what the environment would be like. But I felt so welcome and fit right in with the other students. Thank you!”

The Collage Dance Continuum is an inclusive program designed to expand access to high-quality dance and movement experiences for Memphians of all ages, abilities, and body types. Through adult classes, community engagement initiatives, and partnerships, the Continuum fosters connection, wellness, and creativity across the city. By removing traditional barriers to dance, the program builds a more vibrant, empowered community where everyone has the opportunity to move, express themselves, and belong.
“Our girl Ana was one of just 150 students selected to participate in the American Ballet Theater summer intensive – and it wouldn’t have happened without Collage! The way Collage has taken our children under their wings and created safe spaces for them to grow and find a true love for dance is a true blessing. They inspire our children to achieve excellence and show them every day that they belong in spaces that they once felt unwelcome and excel beyond our wildest dreams!”
Collage Dance is especially grateful to our recurring donors! Consistent support from our most dedicated patrons makes a powerful impact on our planning and programming.
