DANCER SPOTLIGHT

Getting to know company artist
KIMBERLEY HO-TSAÏ

Originally from French Guiana in South America, Kimberley lived in New York City for 7 years before moving to Memphis in 2015 to join Collage Dance Collective.

Recently, Kim got an opportunity to bring Collage to her home country for performances and master classes. It was an experience the company will not soon forget.

How are you staying busy, sane and in shape, at home these days?
I try to have a schedule down for the day to try to stay productive. I do barres, and workouts online on Instagram or Zoom.

When did you begin dancing and how did you get started?
I began dancing when I was seven years old. My mother wanted me to do an after school activity, and since my youngest age I would always dance around in the living room, so she decided to enroll me to dance classes.

What’s your favorite quote and why?
“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” -Leonardo da Vinci

Nowadays, social media and society put so much pressure on women to look a certain way (plastic surgery, make-up, filters, lace front wigs to name a few)! I have to remind myself that I will always feel better and look better if I stay true to who I am and trust what God gave me. Don’t get me wrong, I like make up and to get all done up sometimes, but I really try to feel comfortable in my most natural state.

What’s your favorite part of being a professional dancer and why?
I like being able to be on stage to tell a story, or just to make the audience feel something. I also really love the positive impact professional dancers or artists can have on the youth. Setting an example to show them that they can achieve anything.

For the new dancer and even the young trainee, what advice would you give?
Have discipline. Being a dancer is a lifestyle. Crosstrain. But also go watch dance performances to stay inspired, stay current and stay educated about your craft.

Why should people experience a ballet performance at least once in their life?
People should experience a ballet performance at least once in their life because it is one of the most physical and athletic art forms to exist.

If you weren’t a professional ballet dancer what would you be doing?
I think I would be in fashion, beauty, or cosmetics. Or maybe a social media influencer. I also love weddings, so maybe a wedding planner. Who knows?

What are some people, places or things that make Memphis home for you?
I think some people who made Memphis home to me are Kevin and Marcellus. Besides the work environment, they always try to help with anything we might need here in Memphis and have holidays parties to bring us all together. They are like our Memphis godfathers. Also, my co-workers are my colleagues, but also my friends. I’m so happy that we all get along. It makes long days or weeks of work go by smoother.

When you’re not training long days or touring with the company, where can we find you in Memphis?
At the gym, at my pool when it’s warm, or at the movie theater. Or one of my favorite restaurants like Babulu, Hop Doddy or Houston’s. Also, Target!

Who’s your biggest fan?
My parents for sure! But, also Collage parent Kim Perry. After every performance she always has flowers and a little gift bag for me. On top of being an amazing gift giver, she has been very supportive. Sometimes she sends me little messages to make sure I’m doing well. I truly appreciate her.

Must have item in your dance bags and dressing room?
Spearmint gum, potpourri and feminine wipes. I like to keep it fresh and clean as you can see.

What music artists are you listening to right now?
I’ve been listening to Billie Eilish, Doja cat, Cardi B, WizKid and Burna Boy.

Best movie you’ve seen this year?
Parasite! highly recommend it! Harriet is also a good movie.

What TV shows are you binge watching to make it through the quarantine?
I binge watched Money Heist, Madame CJ Walker and Elite on Netflix. But I’ve been more into movies these past few weeks.

First place you plan to go to when we can go “out” again?
The beach, or to one of my favorite restaurants. Or go for drinks with my friends to catch up. I can’t wait.
