The time has come that we tell our stories... our way!

Reframing the Narrative, our 15th anniversary season, spotlights stories from communities of color, reclaims our space in classical narratives and expands the canon of classical works to include us all.

Experience Kevin Thomas’s bold reimagining of FIREBIRD, set in a magical South African jungle, and Rise, set to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s prophetic final speech, plus George Balanchine’s poignant Prodigal Son, based on the biblical parable of sin and redemption, and a revised premiere of the classical ballet imagining of Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God from Amy Hall Garner and Kevin Thomas.

These ballets provide the backdrop to showcase Collage’s virtuosic company artists, its visionary creative team and its relentless pursuit to push the boundaries of classical ballet.

Join us for a season of opulence and beauty celebrating the resilience of the human spirit through the lens of Black storytellers – a season that reframes Black narratives in classical ballet to showcase the relevance and relatability ballet can have for 21st century audiences.

SEASON 15

PROGRAM

FALL SEASON

with Memphis Symphony Orchestra

OCTOBER 25 - 27, 2024

CANNON CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS

Kevin Thomas’s bold reimagining of FIREBIRD is set to transport audiences to Africa’s mythical forest of Tokoloshe, infusing this timeless tale with rich elements of tribal heritage, wizardly wonder, mystical charm and resonant cultural symbolism.

Our fall performance also features George Balanchine’s poignant Prodigal Son, the ultimate story of sin and redemption, and the company premiere of Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, a tour de force display of ballet bravura and technique.

WINTER SEASON

with Memphis Symphony Orchestra

JANUARY 31 - FEBRUARY 2, 2025

CANNON CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS

Their Eyes Were Watching God, a new ballet reimagining of Zora Neale Hurston’s iconic 1937 novel of the same title, brings to life the classic tale of love, freedom, and self-realization. Noted by Pointe Magazine as “one of the most diverse creative production teams,” this first-of-its-kind ballet features co-choreography by Amy Hall Garner and Kevin Thomas, three dozen period-inspired costumes, and an original score from award-winning composer Quinn Mason performed live by the Memphis Symphony Orchestra.

Our winter performance also features Kevin Thomas’ hallmark ballet Rise. Set to a dramatic musical arrangement of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s final speech featuring professional company artists performing alongside budding dancers, Rise is both a reflection of what we have overcome and a bold envisioning of where we go from here, plus Trilogy, an emotionally evocative journey through civil liberties in three movements, choreographed by Kevin Iega Jeff.
