FOUR SOLITUDES

Rainer Maria Rilke wrote that love consists of “solitudes that protect and border and greet each other.” Love, in this sense, can connect and hold us without opposing Aloneness.

I like to think of choreography manifesting out of the action and reaction of humans in relationship with each other, with our world, and with our questions. Four Solitudes is animated by the push and pull of the human condition: we can stand strong in our solitudes and still be virtuosic at togetherness.

This quartet is also simply an expression of love for dancers and dancing, and an embodiment of gratitude for the luminous Schubert piano sonata that inspired it.

As a director and dance-maker Hope received a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for her own Covid Safe residency #BoykinBubble and in the fall of 2021 she premiered a full evening of her choreography, An Evening of Hope at 92nd Street Y in New York City. Hope released “Beauty Size & Color” a short film commenting on what has changed in the first twenty years of the 21st century on PBS.org which was nominated for a 2023 NY Emmy Award, as well as a weekend of her own work, *Moments By Hope, … a concert.* Hope was featured on the October cover of Dance Magazine in recognition of her achievements as a creator, mover, maker, and motivator and created States Of Hope, a fully scripted, evening length, new dance theater work,  which premiered at The Joyce Theater in October of 2023 to great acclaim.

As an educator, creator, mover, and motivator, Hope firmly believes there are no limits.

Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite is a former company member of Ballet British Columbia and William Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt.

In a choreographic career spanning 35 years, Pite has created more than sixty works for companies such as The Royal Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, The Paris Opera Ballet, and the National Ballet of Canada. She is known for works that courageously address themes such as trauma, addiction, conflict, consciousness and mortality; her bold and original vision has earned her international acclaim and inspired an entire generation of dance artists.

She is an Associate Artist at three institutions: Nederlands Dans Theater, Sadler’s Wells (London) and Canada’s National Arts Centre. She has an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Simon Fraser University, is a Member of the Order of Canada and holds the honour of Officier de l’Ordre of Arts et des Lettres from France.

In 2002, she formed Kidd Pivot in Vancouver, a company that strives to distill and translate universal questions into artworks that connect us to essential parts of humanity. World-renowned for radical hybrids of dance and theatre, Kidd Pivot tours internationally with critically-acclaimed works such as Betroffenheit, Revisor, and Assembly Hall (co-created with Jonathon Young), The Tempest Replica, Dark Matters, Lost Action, and The You Show.

Pite’s many awards include the 2022 Governor General of Canada’s Performing Arts Award, the 2011 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award and the Canada Council’s 2012 Jacqueline Lemieux Prize. In 2017, she received the Benois de la Danse for her creation The Seasons’ Canon at the Paris Opera Ballet. In 2018, she received the Grand Prix de la danse de Montréal. She is the recipient of five Sir Laurence Olivier awards for creations with Kidd Pivot and The Royal Ballet.

JOSHUA MANCULICH (CHOREOGRAPHER) from Windber, PA, graduated as valedictorian in 2005 and went on to pursue dance and psychology studies at Point Park University. While there, Josh was a recipient of the Conservatory’s Outstanding Graduate Award for his artistic involvement in the Pittsburgh community. He had the opportunity to perform works by Douglas Bentz, Jennifer Keller, Kiesha Lalama-White, Peter LeBreton Merz, Whitney Moncrief, Caroline Skjorshammer, and Paul Sutherland. Joshua’s performance credits include The Pillow Project, an innovative Pittsburgh-based company under the direction of Pearl Ann Porter and JMT-JLS Productions, under the direction of The A.W.A.R.D. Show! winners Jessica Miller Tomlinson (2009) and Jacqueline Stewart (2010). While in Chicago, he has danced three seasons with Thodos Dance Chicago, participated in Autumn Eckman’s Dance Chance, and in the summer of 2012, was fortunate to be a founding performance member of Pursuit Productions, an up-and-coming dance theater force, under the direction of Ahmad Simmons and Kacie Smith.

NICOLO FONTE (CHOREOGRAPHER) is known for his unique movement language as well as the highly developed fusion of ideas, dance and design that is a hallmark of his work. A first generation American, Fonte – whose parents emigrated to the US from Argentina, started dancing at the age of 14. He studied at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York, San Francisco Ballet, School of American Ballet and also completed a Bachelor Degree of Fine Arts at SUNY Purchase. His dance career took him from Peridance in NYC, to Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, and, ultimately to Nacho Duato’s Compañia Nacional de Danza in Madrid.

Mr. Fonte received a Choo San Goh award for Almost Tango, his 2002 choreography for Pacific Northwest Ballet. Almost Tango was also voted as one of Dance Europe’s “Best Premiere’s” when it was re-staged for The Australian Ballet in 2004. His very first full-length work Re: Tchaikovsky, created for The Gothenburg Ballet in 2005, appeared on the “Best of 2005” lists of both Ballett-Tanz and Dance Europe. Since that time, Fonte has created an additional two full-evening works, both for BalletX (Philadelphia): Beautiful Decay (2013), and Beasts (2015).

Fonte’s choreography has been performed by companies large and small all over the globe – from Het National Ballet in Amsterdam to the National Dance Company of El Salvador. In addition to his three original full-length ballets, re-invigorated versions of classic scores, and extraordinary collaborations with artists across many disciplines are all well represented in Mr. Fonte’s work over the past twenty years. From 2002 to 2006 Nicolo enjoyed an ongoing creative partnership with The Gothenburg Ballet in Sweden, and has been an important contributor to the repertories of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet and BalletX in Philadelphia. He is currently the Resident Choreographer for Ballet West in Salt Lake City and has contributed numerous successful works to the repertory of this acclaimed ensemble.
