When the Cotton Makers Jubilee began in 1936, it was created as a parallel celebration to the white-only Cotton Carnival and quickly developed its own court traditions. The Jubilee featured:
The cotillion functioned as the formal presentation of young Black women and men to society and became one of the most anticipated and elegant events of the Jubilee. These presentations emphasized refinement, social grace, scholarship, and community pride.
Over time, these Jubilee cotillions helped shape and inspire the modern Links cotillions and beautillions that continue across Memphis and the South today. They served not only as social events but also as powerful cultural statements celebrating Black achievement, beauty, and leadership at a time of segregation.
